Everything Started with Hazel
MY GREAT GRANDMA WAS A FIESTY WOMAN.
She was an opinionated perfectionist when it came to food, baked goods, and quilts because those are the things she gave to the people she valued. She loved her family through perfectly tender roast beef, meticulously layered jell-o, countless stitches in handmade quilts, and cakes. Cakes, upon cakes, upon cakes.
My mom was determined to learn from my Great Grandma, so I grew up making and decorating cakes for birthday parties and showers. It was part of our family culture, in a way. We made our own cakes without thinking twice. Whatever the tasty treat, we figured we could find a way to do it. We thought, “Why buy a cake when we can learn from Grandma and do it how she did?” Learning was a slow process, filled with a lot of trial and error, but every time that I managed to make a cake work, I believed I was making my great grandma proud by carrying on part of her legacy.

SO SHOWING VALUE WITH CAKES ALL BEGAN WITH HAZEL BURT.
Funnily enough, my great grandma hated her name, but I loved it. When I was 8 years old I told her that when I grew up and had a daughter, I would name her Hazel. She would make a face and say, "Don't do that to your child," but I knew she was tickled. My great grandma passed away in 2014 and never got to meet her great great granddaughter, but I kept my promise.
My Hazel was born in 2017 and she changed my world, as all babies do. I had worked as a math teacher for 4 years, but another Hazel started another beginning.
Pearl's Cakery was born from the determination to do whatever I needed in order to be home to raise my daughter. Soon enough, our daughter Leah and son Micah also came along, and I am so thankful that I get to be home to raise my three kids using skills and values I learned from my family.
My hope is that through cakes and cupcakes you know that you are valued, because they are made with love.
